Dynamics of Abuse

Workshop recorded on October 25, 2025

Dynamics of Abuse delves into the role of power in shaping abusive behavior, establishing parallels between abuse and systems of oppression. This workshop aims to dispel misconceptions, such as the idea that abuse originates from childhood abuse, and address common misunderstandings among therapists regarding the tactics employed by abusers. We’ll emphasize the shift in focus away from attempting to rehabilitate abusers, who exhibit limited desire to change, towards providing competent and anti-oppressive support to survivors.

What to Expect:

  • A comprehensive definition  of abuse, including its underlying cause
  • An in-depth discussion on “mutual” and emotional abuse
  • The inconvenient truth about abusers’ desire/capacity for change
  • Strategies and resources for supporting survivors from an abolitionist lens

Who is this workshop for:

  • Licensed clinicians and clinical interns (social workers, therapists, psychologists)
  • Mental health professionals, including peer supporters, working with clients experiencing abuse
  • Unlicensed practitioners of any kind committed to anti-oppressive and survivor-centered care

Learning Objectives:

  • By the end of this session, participants will be able to explain what abuse is and describe common dynamics including types of abuse and control.
  • By the end of this session, participants will be able to explore all the aspects of their role in supporting clients who are experiencing abuse, including naming it, creating safety, and building long term safety and well-being.
